I was familiar with the word, volunteer. I checked its dictionary definition - To perform or offer to perform a service of one's own free will. We know many words but after all the meaning of the words are recognized deeply after we encounter them in a real life situations. Yes, I have started volunteering after coming to Canada. I heard that one has to do volunteer work in order to get started in new country. Most of the time industry people are not willing to take risk with hiring a new comer. I guess new comer might have started this volunteer work concept in a job environment. In a social aspect, the volunteers are needed for fund raising and doing community services.
I was frustrated and did not understand what to do in Toronto. I found Toronto volunteer website. I was amazed to find the dedicated website on which people put their advertisement for volunteer work. So, I have decided to go out and do some volunteer work. This website gave me the opportunity. My aim was to meet people so that I can interact with them. I want to know the work culture here. It's quiet different than my past background.
I talked with few friends here. They shared their experience about volunteering in Toronto. In the media industry, most of the people take advantage of volunteer. I started volunteer work for fun. My first volunteer experience was with Toronto Green Community. It was the wonderful experience. I worked as volunteer for eco-gift wrapping during Christmas. I met lot of people and wrapped gifts. In high schools, you need to do volunteer social service for 20 hrs. I met lot of teens from high school, who came there to get a letter for community service credit in school. I liked this concept of school community volunteer thing. It gives opportunity to develop people skills.
I always wanted to join old people home or orphanage to do social service. I got this opportunity through volunteer website. I am going to the long-term care for old people as the volunteer. There are people from 90-100 yr old. It is a very enriching experience helping the old people to have fun and entertainment.
I have talked a lot about volunteer word. :) . Now I have started my technical volunteer work as a job too.
